Mother Veronica Center

Our History and Mission

Over a century of compassion, service, and empowerment

Our History

1894: The Journey Begins

Four Bernardine Franciscan Sisters made the courageous journey from Poland to the United States, led by Mother Veronica Grzedowska. As immigrants themselves, they came to serve and support other immigrants seeking a better life in a new land.

Early Foundations

They found their first permanent home in Reading, Pennsylvania, where they began their ministry by founding St. Francis Orphanage. Over time, the orphanage grew into a grade school, then a high school, and eventually became the first building of what is now Alvernia University.

Expanding Impact

For over 120 years, the Sisters have dedicated themselves to caring for people across different countries, cultures, and communities. Their work is rooted in compassion, service, and a deep sense of mission.

Modern Legacy

Continuing this legacy, they responded to the needs of newcomers in the United States by opening the Mother Veronica Resource Center, located on South 6th Street in Reading, PA—a space created to welcome, support, and uplift individuals and families making a fresh start.
